1. \u00a0Read and Understand the Lease<\/strong><\/p>\n

This sounds like a basic tip, but\u00a0it is extremely important. \u00a0Before you sign up for a multi-month (or year) commitment, know what you are getting into. \u00a0Just a few things to look out for:<\/p>\n

-Length of the lease: Is the agreement month-to-month, six months, a year, more?
\n-Renter responsibilities: Which utilities are included, and which aren’t?
\n-Late Payment Penalties: How much are they, and how are they assessed?
\n-Rules about early move-out: If you\u00a0absolutely need to move out before the end of the lease, what is the procedure?
\n-And More<\/p>\n

Essentially, you don’t want to be surprised by anything. \u00a0While it is a lot easier to just sign the agreement without reading it, you should take your time. \u00a0It can save you a lot of headache later on.<\/p>\n

\"Apartment\"<\/a>2. \u00a0Make\u00a0Sure Everything Works<\/strong><\/p>\n

Landlords are at a disadvantage with the ‘quirks’ of each unit: they don’t live there!<\/p>\n

So unless someone has told them, they may not know that a particular outlet doesn’t work, that a light bulb is out, or that you need to ‘jiggle the handle’ on the toilet.<\/p>\n
