\"Swing\"<\/a>Ah, toddlers.<\/p>\n

Those of you who have been parents, aunts, uncles, or babysitters\u00a0can tell you – a 2\u00a0year old kid is\u00a0a wild ride! \u00a0Amazingly, \u00a0toddlers are also chock full of wisdom\u00a0(despite not being potty trained). \u00a0While it seems like their knowledge would be confined to crayons, toys, and books made out of cardboard, you can learn\u00a0much more from them.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, our two year old (we’ll call her Little Bear) has taught me a ton about real estate investing in Grand Rapids. \u00a0Here are just a few of her\u00a0lessons I’ve tried to apply to our work.<\/p>\n

\u00a01. \u00a0Be persistent.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Little Bear loves to go outside. LOVES IT. \u00a0I think if she could live in a tree house 24\/7, she would be overjoyed.<\/p>\n

\"Snow\"<\/a>It doesn’t matter if it’s freezing cold, pouring rain, or windy enough to blow down a tree… she wants to go out. \u00a0If we tell her ‘not right now,’ she will ask again about 20 minutes later. \u00a0When we finally get outside (for as long as time and temperature\u00a0allow), she doesn’t care about the nasty weather. \u00a0She’ll splash water around, pick up snow, jump in puddles, anything.<\/p>\n

In short, she doesn’t let the challenges stop her from having a great time. \u00a0She sets her goal, and makes the best of it.<\/p>\n

If you can apply this lesson to real estate investing in Grand Rapids, you’ll be nearly unstoppable. \u00a0Whether you’re interested in buying a rental, flipping a house, or working with notes, you will face many challenges. \u00a0You’ll experience unexpected\u00a0delays, stressful conflicts, and plenty of self-doubt. \u00a0If you push through the difficulty, and always make the best of your situation,\u00a0you will find success.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0Use whatever you’ve got.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2 year-olds are constantly on the move. \u00a0Whether they’re finding the (37th) perfect place for their doll, moving pillows from the couch to the bed (to the floor… to the chair…), or just RUNNING, they have a lot of plans.<\/p>\n

Toddlers are also very small.<\/p>\n

So, they face a challenge – how do I get where I want to go? \u00a0How can I get onto the couch, or get my baby on top of the counter?<\/p>\n

<\/a>Little Bear, like most 2 year olds, will just use what she has. \u00a0If she can find a stool, she’ll stand on it. \u00a0If she has to stack up pillows like a staircase, that works too. \u00a0If all else fails, she can throw the doll to it’s destination (followed by the blanket, pacifier, and toy bottle).<\/p>\n

This is a GREAT way to approach\u00a0real estate investing. \u00a0Few people are blessed with infinite time, wisdom, and money. \u00a0However, we all have something we can offer.<\/p>\n

Maybe you’ve saved up some cash from a second job. \u00a0Or you’re flat\u00a0broke, but have a flexible schedule that allows you to hustle harder. \u00a0Maybe your old roommate’s cousin is a property manager, and you can learn the ropes from her.<\/p>\n

Whatever the case, dig in. \u00a0Don’t let the things you LACK define your progress. \u00a0Make the most of your available\u00a0resources, and constantly strive to reach your goals.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0Don’t be afraid to say NO.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Little Bear is very clear with her wishes. \u00a0Some days, she wants 3 helpings of green beans. \u00a0Other days, simply mentioning a green bean will get a hard NO, complete with a frantic hand wave to push away any POSSIBLE bean.<\/p>\n

‘No’ is a very powerful word in our\u00a0toddler’s arsenal. \u00a0It helps her\u00a0express her\u00a0wishes, communicate boundaries, and keep control over some elements of her life.<\/p>\n

\"No\"<\/a>As you progress in your real estate investing in Grand Rapids, you will have more and more demands on your time. \u00a0Unleash your inner 2-year old, and say NO to things that don’t help you on your path.<\/p>\n

Don’t be afraid to walk away from a deal if\u00a0the numbers don’t work. \u00a0If an exciting opportunity comes up in another state, but you want to stay local, turn it down. \u00a0\u00a0If a guru is pitching ‘the next best thing,’ but it doesn’t line up with your goals, say no.<\/p>\n

If you want to be successful, you must stay focused. \u00a0By saying NO to the wrong opportunities, you leave yourself the time and space to say YES to the right ones.<\/p>\n

4. \u00a0Keep a cheerful spirit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Life is a roller coaster… especially when you’re 2. \u00a0One minute, you’re running along, having the time of your life. \u00a0The next, you’ve tripped and scraped up your knees (again). \u00a0Or perhaps you’re enjoying a delicious M & M, only to be devastated when you realize you’re only allowed to have one. \u00a0Bath time rolls around, but the imaginary pizza in your kitchen still has 3 minutes to bake.<\/p>\n

The ups and downs can be exhausting.<\/p>\n

\"Happy<\/a>However, through it all, Little Bear is able to keep her cheerful spirit. \u00a0After a quick kiss of her boo-boos and an encouraging word, she’s ready to run again. \u00a0She might not get any more M & Ms, but her strawberries\u00a0taste great too. \u00a0That pizza might be unfinished, but there are some great bath toys waiting!<\/p>\n

Don’t let the world beat you down. \u00a0Real estate investing is a long-term game; you probably won’t find massive success in your first month. \u00a0Stay cheerful, and keep your enthusiasm as you experience setbacks. \u00a0You’ll make progress much quicker with a happy heart.<\/p>\n

5. \u00a0Be honest in everything you do.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Toddlers are brutally honest. \u00a0If you have a runny nose, they will make a grossed-out face and tell you that ‘you need a tissue.’ \u00a0If you wear a ridiculous shirt, they will ask you ‘what is that?’ and be confused by your answer. \u00a0They laugh genuinely, hug lovingly, and tell you what they want with\u00a0clarity.<\/p>\n

On the flip side, it is crucial to keep your promises. \u00a0If you tell a 2 year old\u00a0they get a treat once you arrive home, they will remember. \u00a0If you say\u00a0that you only have to wipe\u00a0their face ‘one more time,’ but go for 3 extra scrubs, they will protest.<\/p>\n

Simple, direct honesty\u00a0is best.<\/p>\n

The same thing applies to real estate investing. \u00a0Always be honest. \u00a0Whether you’re dealing with\u00a0partners, clients, or contractors, tell the truth and keep your promises.<\/p>\n

So go ahead. \u00a0Channel your inner toddler, and make it happen!<\/p>\n
