Since purchasing a house is such a big decision, these momentary errors in judgment\u00a0can have long-term negative consequences on your life (and your bank account). \u00a0So how do we avoid these crushing mistakes?<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0Determine your goals (and priorities) in advance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We would all love a giant house in the perfect neighborhood, with great schools, low crime, and quick access to our favorite attractions and stores. \u00a0However, since few of us have access to unlimited funds, we often need to prioritize.<\/p>\n

\"List\"<\/a>What is most important to you and your family? \u00a0Is it crucial for you to have at least 3 bedrooms? \u00a0Do you want to be in a particular school district? \u00a0Do you want to make sure your mortgage doesn’t exceed X per month?<\/p>\n

Determine your top priority, and possibly 1-2 other ‘make or break’ conditions. \u00a0Don’t budge on these. \u00a0If it is extremely important for you to buy a house in Grand Rapids with 3 bedrooms and a back yard, stick to it.<\/p>\n

You may have to compromise on\u00a0other things, such as home style, kitchen updates, or\u00a0commute times. \u00a0However, if you\u00a0make sure your top needs are met, you will\u00a0be happier with your purchase.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0Know when to walk away.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Buying a house can be very emotional. \u00a0Homes are a huge investment, both financially and mentally. \u00a0It’s very easy to get swept up in the moment, and make rash decisions.<\/p>\n
