The mortgage company asks for about 1,000 documents. \u00a0Everyone needs to coordinate with the title company. Etcetera, etcetera.<\/p>\n

Does it ever end? \u00a0How did such a simple process (buying and selling something) get so crazy?<\/p>\n

Fortunately, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. \u00a0Once everything clears, you will have a great new place to call your own. \u00a0However, how do you deal with stress DURING the closing process?<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0Remember that\u00a0the stress is temporary.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Through many cultures, wise teachers have passed on this pearl of advice:\u00a0“This too, shall pass.”<\/p>\n

\"Clock\"<\/a>While the closing period\u00a0seems eternal, remember that in the grand scheme of things, this intense, detailed process will be over soon. \u00a0This tip alone can keep you sane as you\u00a0search for old W-2s from three years ago.<\/p>\n

Prepare yourself to\u00a0‘hurry up and wait.’ \u00a0One week, you may have to coordinate inspections, talk to 12 people about land boundaries, and rush to sign 9 documents for your mortgage company. \u00a0The next, you might get one email from your Grand Rapids Realtor telling you that ‘things are coming along.’ \u00a0This is normal, and expected. \u00a0It can be jarring though!<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0Control what you can, let go of what you can’t.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the closing process, many things are in your control. \u00a0You choose\u00a0the house, the offer price, and your contingencies. \u00a0You can decide\u00a0if the inspection is acceptable, shop around for mortgage rates, and negotiate closing costs.<\/p>\n

\"Hands\"<\/a>However, it is impossible to control everything. \u00a0You don’t decide\u00a0your appraisal amount. \u00a0You can’t determine whether the seller will accept, counter, or decline your offer. \u00a0You can’t speed up the mortgage company (much), and you can’t control last minute title-issues that threaten the purchase.<\/p>\n

So, work hard on the things you can influence. \u00a0Follow up during your due diligence period, and do your homework with regards to your financing. \u00a0But don’t stress about the things you can’t control.<\/p>\n

While this process is very emotional, remember that other houses exist. \u00a0If, in the worst case scenario, you can’t purchase the home, there will be another. \u00a0Let go of the uncontrollable, and you will sleep much better at night.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0Don’t get too ahead of yourself.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many people start picking out furniture as soon as they make an offer. \u00a0They envision the wall colors, the baby room, and how they’re going to redo the kitchen. \u00a0While this is fun and enjoyable, tread carefully.<\/p>\n

\"Man\"<\/a>Until the house is yours, you don’t want to be 100% emotionally invested in it. \u00a0Often, the inspection process will reveal flaws in the house. \u00a0There may be challenges to the property lines, or an old lien that everyone forgot about.<\/p>\n

First, you need to be able to walk away if the house is not right for you. \u00a0If you’re ‘all-in’ emotionally, this is much harder to do.<\/p>\n

Secondly, if\u00a0the house doesn’t work, and you’ve already committed yourself to living there, it can be extremely disappointing. \u00a0If you keep\u00a0some\u00a0emotional\u00a0distance\u00a0between yourself and the home, this is much easier.<\/p>\n

So go ahead and think about the neat things you’re imagining for the place. \u00a0But temper your enthusiasm, and\u00a0don’t count your chickens before they hatch!<\/p>\n

4. \u00a0Don’t do ‘house stuff’ right before bed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If it’s 9:30 PM, and you normally go to bed at 10:30, don’t start working things for\u00a0your potential new house\u00a0(unless you have no other options).<\/p>\n

\"Moon\"<\/a>Buying a house is a long process, with many steps. \u00a0Even after you close, you need to coordinate logistics for the move, your furniture, paint colors, and more. \u00a0If you start working on them, your brain will start spinning, and it can be difficult to fall asleep.<\/p>\n

Do what you can in the evening, but relax a bit before bed. \u00a0In almost every case, tasks can wait until the morning.<\/p>\n
