But before you pack your bags,\u00a0there are several key numbers you need to know. \u00a0Rental houses come with different challenges than apartments, and you don’t want to be blindsided by the unexpected.<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0Association Dues<\/strong><\/p>\n

Different neighborhoods\u00a0have different amenities. \u00a0Some might have a great community pool, and others maintain a playground or basketball court. \u00a0Some associations\u00a0have\u00a0clubhouses, and others provide a nice barbecue for residents a few times a year.<\/p>\n

\"Pool\"<\/a>These are nice perks. \u00a0However, they come with a cost. \u00a0After all, pools, basketball hoops, and playgrounds don’t pay for themselves! \u00a0Check in advance if the house is a part of a community association, and if you (as a renter) are responsible for dues.<\/p>\n

Also, find out if there is\u00a0an a pet fee for your property. \u00a0Many rental houses in\u00a0Grand Rapids charge extra for cats and dogs, and some have breed restrictions.<\/p>\n

These different charges\u00a0can add up to a couple hundred dollars, which will wreck your budget if you’re not careful.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0The Phone Number for Maintenance Emergencies<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many apartment complexes have maintenance people on staff, or at least someone on call for emergencies. \u00a0But as a house renter, who do you call if your water heater starts leaking all over the floor? \u00a0What if a window breaks in a hailstorm?<\/p>\n

Find the number for maintenance emergencies, and put it right on your fridge. \u00a0Hopefully, you will never have to use it. \u00a0But if you do, you’ll be glad you don’t have to dig for it!<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0Internet Service Pricing<\/strong><\/p>\n

In-home internet is the new normal, and is\u00a0almost necessary nowadays. \u00a0But depending on your area, the service pricing can vary widely.<\/p>\n

\"Internet\"<\/a>For instance, you might be able to swing that $20\/month deal from a national provider. \u00a0Or, you might get stuck with a $75\u00a0plan from the local phone company. \u00a0Or, you might have to go with a mobile hotspot (or satellite service), which can run $150\/month or more.<\/p>\n

Make sure to do some research ahead of time, so you don’t get stuck with internet that costs an arm and a leg.<\/p>\n

4. \u00a0Snow Service\u00a0Fees<\/strong><\/p>\n

Depending on your area, house, and personal situation, shoveling yourself\u00a0out of a snowy driveway may not be an option. \u00a0Maybe it’s a huge driveway. \u00a0Perhaps you\u00a0are not physically able to do the work. \u00a0Or maybe, like many people, you\u00a0just\u00a0hate shoveling!<\/p>\n

Utilities can really wreck a budget in West Michigan. \u00a0Insulation, window types, and attic structure make a huge difference in your heating costs, and the built-in appliances may be hard on your electric bill.<\/p>\n

Try to estimate\u00a0your monthly electricity, gas, and water costs. \u00a0Your landlord may have copies of recent statements, or you can\u00a0call the provider and ask. \u00a0No one wants to be shocked by a huge utility bill, so if you can closely guess\u00a0the numbers\u00a0in advance, you’ll be much better prepared for the cold months.<\/p>\n
