Two days ago, my brother called and asked me: “What are you doing at 4:00\u00a0AM on Friday?”<\/p>\n

Me: “Um… sleeping? \u00a0Yep. \u00a0Definitely sleeping.”<\/p>\n

Bro: “No you’re not.”<\/p>\n

Which, is how you wind up seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/em> at 4:00 AM on opening day. \u00a0And as I reflect on the experience, I realize there are a lot of lessons to be learned, and connections to buying houses in Grand Rapids. \u00a0And don’t worry… no spoilers ahead!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

1. \u00a0The experience is only as good as the people you’re with.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I saw Star Wars<\/em> with two of my brothers. \u00a0Because we\u00a0live in different cities, we picked a central location for the movie. \u00a0This led me to set an alarm for 2:30 AM… enough time for a quick shower, a gallon of coffee, and arrival at the theater with 3 whole minutes to spare.<\/p>\n

Now, this is a rough time of day. \u00a0If the two of them had been grumpy, pushy, or cynical, it would have made for a VERY rocky\u00a0start. \u00a0But they were happy, excited, and ready to have a great time. \u00a0We fed off of each other’s positive energy, and pushed through the problems that come with waking up so early.<\/p>\n

Buying a house is similar. \u00a0You want to work with great people! \u00a0Since challenges arise so frequently with home purchases in Grand Rapids, pick\u00a0positive folks who will help you work through problems. \u00a0Choose\u00a0people that are knowledgeable, experienced, and responsive.<\/p>\n

Working with bad professionals while buying a house is a lot\u00a0like being around a Negative Nancy at 3:30\u00a0AM with no coffee. \u00a0Avoid it at all costs!<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0Being flexible is key.<\/strong><\/p>\n

4:00 AM is a weird time to see a movie. \u00a0It’s not the first showing, it’s not convenient, and it kills your normal sleep schedule. \u00a0But for us, it was the only option!<\/p>\n

With holiday events, family needs, work commitments, and classes challenging us, it was this or nothing. \u00a0We wouldn’t have gotten another chance to watch The Force Awakens<\/em>\u00a0in the theater, and we would have missed out on a great experience.<\/p>\n

Buying houses is similar. \u00a0Maybe you’re only able to get a showing booked at 7:00 AM on a Wednesday, because the Realtor is going out of town. \u00a0Maybe you have to extend a contract, because the inspector didn’t\u00a0give you their\u00a0report on time. \u00a0Or maybe you have to consider different mortgage options, because the house needs some repairs right away.<\/p>\n

Whatever the case may be, don’t let a strange situation keep you out of your dream home. \u00a0By looking at all of your options, staying flexible, and keeping your end goal firmly in mind, you can\u00a0get the place you’ve always wanted.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0Thinking outside the box can be great.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Other than the early alarm clock, we had a great movie watching experience. \u00a0There was no traffic on the way to the theater, we got right in, and the place was not packed (surprise, surprise).<\/p>\n

By looking in an unexpected place (the 4 AM showing), and putting in a little extra work (knocking off a few hours of sleep), we experienced something great. \u00a0We watched biggest release of the year on opening day, and\u00a0had the theater to ourselves!<\/p>\n

If you tie this lesson in to real estate, you can get great results. \u00a0Perhaps you find a little fixer-upper that everyone else has ignored, because it needs repairs. \u00a0Maybe you notice a ‘For Sale By Owner’ house that wasn’t posted online, and snag\u00a0a great deal. \u00a0Or maybe you find a gem\u00a0in an up-and-coming\u00a0part of town,\u00a0because you’ve taken the time to learn the area.<\/p>\n

Whatever the case, thinking outside the box can have major benefits. \u00a0So jump in, and don’t be afraid to dig for diamonds in the rough.<\/p>\n
